Geoengineering is the deliberate large-scale manipulation of the Earth’s natural systems and is often presented as a techno-fix for combating climate change. Geoengineering can refer to a huge range of different techniques, processes that include spraying sulphur dioxide into the upper atmosphere to reflect sunlight or dumping iron slurry in the oceans to produce CO2 absorbing algal blooms. Friends of the Earth fundamentally opposes geoengineering because of the potentially catastrophic consequences of experimenting with the very systems that sustain life on Earth.
